Milano

La spiaggia di Rimini e' molto lunga - The Rimini beach is very long.

Last night Katrina and I had troubles falling asleep. At one point Katrina got to write a note. I got up, just to get up. On our way back to bed I spotted Brandon sleeping in the living room, but in a very interesting position.

I woke up later in the night and found him asleep on the couch. This morning Katrina found him asleep in his own bed. The boy travels and sleeps in interesting places!

Brandon played a little Mariokart while I chatted with Errol on Facebook.

Waiting for the bus.

After a slow start, Brandon and I headed out for our adventure into Milano. Step 1 was to catch autobus z221 on the corner. We just missed one bus, so we had to wait about 25 min for the next one. Autobus z221 took us all the way to Sesto San Giovanni, where we would catch the Metro (subway).

We caught the red line Metro to the Duomo and arrived about an hour after we left home. First item on the agenda was to visit the roof of the Duomo. We have done this before, but Brandon wanted to do it again. Unfortunately, they charged us for Brandon this time. Last time he was free. I don't know enough Italian to argue about it.

Climbing steps to the roof of the Duomo.

We climbed the stairs up, up, round and round until we reached the lower level of the roof. We slowly made our way around the rooftop, heading for the stairway that would take us to the very top. Oncce we reached the very top, it was hot hot hot. The lower roof was shaded, but the top was in the full sun. Once again, we had nice views of the city and the Alps. They had the roof setup with benches, lights and a stage for what appeared to be an opera performance. Interesting venue!

Setup for a rooftop concert..very interesting venue!

I love all the spires on the roof of the Duomo.

Trying to get a view through the stained glass windows.

After wandering around the entire rooftop, we slowly made our way back down to Piazza di Duomo. Step 2 on our agenda - Lunch. It was lunch time and what better lunch is there in the middle of Milano than McDonalds! Yes, we had McDonalds. A couple of hamburgers, fries and a McFlurry for Brandon. He chose a McFlurry over a gelato?

After lunch we walked towards the Castello. I was going to get a gelato from a shop we really like in the pedestrian mall, but decided to wait until later. We stopped to watch a street performer on the way to the Castello.

Step 4, make our way through the Castello and visit the aquarium in the park. We walked all the way through the Castello and out the backside into the park and headed towards the aquarium. When we arrived we found it closed for the lunch hour. Bummer. We could wait for 45min or just move on. It was hot, so we decided to make our way to the National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo da Vinci.

Roman ruins we passed on the way to the museum.

It was a bit of a walk, but we took our time and stayed on the shady sides of the streets. We finally found it, but it took awhile to find the entrance! We had to walk all the way to the opposite side of the block before we found it.

What a great museum, and we only saw about half of it. The beginning left a bit to be desired. There were workshop rooms for hands on experiments with robots, microscopes and electricity, but they were all closed. Then we found the train pavilion. What a nice display!! After that we found an actual full size submarine on display in the courtyard. Unfortunately, the tours inside were closed for the day. Then we found the jets and airplanes, as well as an entire building full of airplanes, a full size sailing ship and the actual bridge section of an old cruise ship. It looks as thought the building was constructed around the sailing ship.

A few of the locomotives on display.

There were several jets on display in the courtyard.

Model ships and real sailing ships, all in the same building.

And on the top floor they had airplanes and helicopters.

We never made it to the third floor displays in the main building where they have jewelry, Leonardo da Vinci displays, Astronomy, sound, telecommunications, paper and polymer exhibits, as well as metals and energy exhibits. We will definitely have to go back.

We were tired, so we headed for home. Brandon's original plan had us taking the yellow Metro to Centrale Stazione, then catching the green Metro back to the red Metro and home. He scrapped this long plan, so we just took the green Metro one stop to the red Metro back into Sesto SG. A z221 bus was in the station, so we hopped on it and arrived home around 5:30pm.

I was in the mood for Mexican food. I texted Katrina with the idea, but she didn't think we had time to drive that far for dinner before she had to work at 9pm. So, we compromised and had Cinese in Lissone, then next town over. Katrina and I both had limone chicken with steamed rice.
