Rainy Day in Venice

We slept in a bit today. We had breakfast at the hotel, then packed up and checked out. They allowed us to store our bags at the hotel while we explored Venice this morning.

Rainy morning in Venice

We wandered towards St Marks Square. When we finally arrived there, we found it flooded. We've seen pictures of the flooding, but have never actually seen the flooding. Not having boots or waterproof shoes, we chose to walk around the square using back streets. After much trekking and a few wrong turns, we finally made it to the opposite side of the square. We wanted Rob, Heather and Dylan to see the cathedral and Doge's Palace from across the square.

Brandon stands on a flood platform, in an unflooded area. These platforms are stored all over the city, ready to be used during flooding. I'm not sure what the white spot is. Rob said it is a mysterious 'orb'.

When flooding occurs, all the tourists walk on these elevated platforms. Many of the locals just wear boots and walk right through the flooded areas.

We stopped at the Ferrari store, where Dylan found a backpack.

At this point we decided to take a vaporetto ride along the length of the Grand Canal. We hopped on at St Mark's. Rob, Dylan, Brandon and I sat at the front of the boat. It was chilly, but we had good views. Heather and Katrina joined us after awhile.

I'm not sure what the message was for this peice of art?

We exited the vaporetto at the Rialto Bridge. Heather and Dylan wanted to try crepes at a shop we spotted last night. Rob, Heather and Dylan had sugar and cinnamon crepes. Katrina, Brandon and I had apple cinnamon crepes. Very tasty! Very filling.

After finishing our crepes, we hopped back on the vaporetto and rode it to the end of the canal, then returned back to the Rialto Bridge again. We were tired, wet and cold, so we headed to the hotel to get our bags. The vaporetto stop near the hotel is on the outside edge of the island, so it was windy and cold. The waves were pretty big! We caught a vaporetto to the train station.

For the return trip home Katrina took the train and the rest of us drove. We ended up arriving in Monza at the same time. We picked up Katrina at the station and headed home.

We had a great time in Venice, despite the rain and cold. Who knows what we will do tomorrow?
